The library has always been a cornerstone of a university education, and since the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was established in 1925, its libraries have enabled students and researchers to make meaningful contributions to Israel’s intellectual and scientific progress.
Today, the Hebrew University flourishes as the home to 24,000 students and 1,300 faculty members, and the University’s libraries face the challenge of providing cutting-edge academic resources for a new generation of scholars.
Hebrew University’s libraries, like libraries around the world, are at a historic turning point. Rapid advances in the capacity to store, retrieve and share knowledge have created new paradigms in information science. Breakthroughs in electronic technology have expanded the virtual definition of a library, with needs ranging from the demand for round-the-clock access to on-line medical protocols to the necessity for high-powered search analyzers and databases to enable researchers to keep pace with dynamic international standards.
No longer the place of research and study for silent individuals, libraries are increasingly required to be the hub of groups of students actively working together. Libraries must accommodate students and professors with laptop computers who conduct on-line research in spaces designed for electronic equipment. The nature of study has also changed, with a greater focus on group learning conducted around an enlarged, shared computer screen.

These sweeping changes are transforming the very definition of a library, and require full-scale renovations of existing infrastructures and furnishings. To meet these needs, the University must reconstruct and refurbish entire areas within historical library buildings, providing electronics, acoustics and furnishings appropriate to computer use and areas for group study. At the same time, areas for quiet study must be adapted for computer and internet use.
The BFHU Book Group will be organising a series of literary-themed events including book readings with renowned authors and links with Jewish Book Week.
Coming soon is our virtual book shelf and library where you will be able to donate a virtual book online! Until then, please buy a book, subscription, shelf or library by donating online here.
